The Clark RDX is a weapon unlocked at the top of the support tree in Battlefield 2142. It launches bombs that will stick to any surface (but strangely not people) with a three second timer. To get it permanently you need to shell out the 10 bucks or so required for the Northern Strike expansion. 99% of all players, however, think that it is utterly useless. Most of the time, they are absolutely correct.

A laundry list of the Clark’s shortcoming’s:

A three second fuse is far too long, it’s pretty easy to avoid.

The explosives make a hissing noise and glow. Obviously this makes it hard to achieve surprise.

The shots leave a visible trail along their flightpath, making it far too easy to spot the shooter.

It can’t kill a man in one shot. I stood right on top of one of my own rounds, and I still had 21% health left after the detonation.

The Assault class’s rocket launcher or even simple hand grenades can already kill most enemies behind cover.

However, yesterday I found its niche (one day I’ll learn how to take decent pictures).

In this picture I am firing the Clark RDX at a sniper on the far right platform. This round I was equipped with the trusty old Clark Shotgun (a decent weapon, only superficially related to the RDX) and, just for giggles, the RDX. Two seconds previously I had thought my only option was to go at it like rambo and see if my pistol was quicker than his rifle, as no shotgun would reach that far and the overhang prevented me from lobbing a grenade into his position. I thought of the pictured alternative just as a round passed a centimeter from my head. I quickly backed up to where he couldn’t see me and pulled out the RDX. I had been messing around with the RDX earlier, so I had become decent at estimating the arc of the rounds. I emptied the four shot clip. When the fourth explosion went off, I scored the kill.

I managed to repeat the feat several times that round. All of my targets had the same quality. A commanding position that couldn’t be attacked with a grenade. Each time I emptied the clip from behind some cover and was rewarded with a kill. In one instance my opponent was very well encamped, and I never saw him. I only knew he was there by the infantry rockets he was spewing into my comrades. He took a few more than one clips, as I wasn’t sure exactly where he was, but the support class has the luxury of carrying his own ammo dump with him.

Which brings me to a few notes on how to repeat my success:

Practice. The C-RDX, like regular grenades, takes a little practice to be accurate with.

Fire from cover. You don’t have to see your target to fire with this gun. A quick look-see after you empty your ammo clip will tell you how far off you were. Even better, you might try getting a squaddie to forward observe for you.

Empty your ammo clip. You’re playing support class, dangit! Your accuracy will never be very high. Don’t worry about it; you have infinite ammo. One grenade can’t kill anybody, four is can nearly take out an FAV (2142′s version of the jeep).

Try to practice at firing from long range. That three second fuse includes flight time. If you fire from far enough away, they’ll only have one second or less to react.

Remember a target running straight towards you will probably pass the RDX rounds before they explode. Aim for enemies in hard to reach, but cramped, places.

On a final note, it’s still debatable how often you’ll find a sniper in a position so good a normal grenade couldn’t do it, but there’s always the chance your enemy will be competent. A lot of support players prefer to fill up their second slot with the EMP grenades in case of enemy vehicles. My personal opinion is that EMP grenades can’t actually hurt the vehicles, so one would be best served just leaving them alone and focusing on the infantry, which you have plenty of weapons for killing.
